171_650On the famous road which winds through the Pyrenean foothills from Perpignan on the Med to Biarritz on the Atlantic coast. Well, it’s off the road but beside its 21st century equivalent: a pathway for cyclists, walkers and riders called the Voie Verte, a disused railway line transformed into a leisure footpath.

The château has been totally retored by its owner, a French Artisan, who has taken the time to create a superb 8 bedroomed dwelling out of the imposing structure, with large, bright reception rooms, big bedrooms and plenty of shower and bath rooms. Everything has been finished by hand, from the wood-framed double glazing to the plastered walls (à l’ancienne) to the planking on the floor. He has installed a mighty wood-burning furnace in the cellar which ensures central-heating and unlimited hot water.

There is a three-bedroomed cottage also included in the sale, as the current owners live in the cottage and rent out the château (for €2300 pw) throughout the ‘season’. One could continue to do this or … the reverse, living in the château and letting the cottage.

Either way, it is a beautiful place to live, near enough to the ski slopes (35 minutes) and the airport (Toulouse 75 mins) while being in constant touch with nature. There’s no pool but a project to put a jacuzzi on every level of the château’s tower.

Our opinion:

There are bigger chateau than this: there are probably more prestigious ones, but for sheer value for money this little 400m² château is hard to beat. And it’s fully functional, sold furnished and equipped; ready to let.
